Bajaj, which bought a 14.5% stake in Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM last year, is now said to be finalizing plans to bring a select few KTM motorcycles to India. KTM manufactures high-performance dual-purpose, street-oriented and supermoto-style bikes, which are powered by KTM’s own single-cylinder and v-twin engines.

Speaking to some journalists from automobile magazines, who were recently taken to Austria to test-ride KTM motorcycles, it seems the first KTM bike to be launched in India would be the 690 Duke. Powered by KTM's 65bhp, 654cc single-cylinder 'LC4' engine, the 690 Duke is likely to be appreciated by sportsbike enthusiasts in the country.

Bajaj is expected to import CKD kits for the KTM 690 Duke, which will then be assembled in India. Prices, of course, have not been announced yet, but the 690 Duke retails for the equivalent of about Rs four lakh in Europe, so it should cost around Rs 5-6 lakh in India, taking import duties into account. Expect to see the bike in Bajaj Probiking showrooms by Diwali this year.

Apart from the 690 Duke, Bajaj may also sell other KTM motorcycles in India, which, to begin with, may be imported as CBUs from Austria. Bikes like the RC8 – KTM’s top-of-the-range superbike – could come to India by mid-2009, and is likely to cost more than Rs 12 lakh on-road.

Rumors have been circulating for almost a week that Lotus was planning to release a stripped-down, low-cost version of the Elise in the States. Today, we finally received confirmation from Lotus' U.S. PR-man, Kevin Smith, that indeed, the Elise "Purist" edition is on the way, and unlike the dozens of other limited-edition Elises coming out of Hethel, this is one we can actually get behind.

According to Smith, the "Purist" edition is an attempt to get the Elise closer to the MSRP it carried when introduced to the U.S. market in 2005. So Lotus has set the price at a slightly more achievable $43,995, or around $3,500 less than a base Elise.

However, the "Purist" is hardly a stripper model. Only available in Ardent Red, Monaco White and Saffron Yellow, the entry-level Lotus is still packing the 190-hp, Toyota-source 2ZZ 1.8-liter four and six-speed manual transmission, along with Bilstein dampers, Eibach springs, AP-developed calipers with ventilated and cross-drilled discs, silver wheels sized 16x5.5 in front and 17x7.5 in the rear, each shod in Yokohama Neova high-performance rubber (175/55 front, 225/45 rear). Black leather seats join a Momo steering wheel, power doors locks, air-conditioning, a four-speaker stereo with in-dash CD player, tire-pressure monitoring system and an alarm with engine immobilizer. The only option available is the Starshield coating for $995. Neither the Sport or Touring pack will be offered and we're okay with that – it's near perfection already.

BMW India, the fully-owned subsidiary of the world’s largest premium car maker BMW Group, will launch its two-seater Roadster Z4 sports car in India in the second half of 2009 and will add 10 dealers in tier-II cities such as Coimbatore, Jaipur, Lucknow and Ludhiana, as its India sales have exceeded expectations, said a top company executive.

“We grew 15% in the first quarter of 2009 and surpassed Mercedes Benz in the sales tally,” said BMW India president Peter Kronschnabl. Mercedes Benz has been the leader in India’s luxury car market for more than decade, but BMW surpassed it by selling 992 cars in the first quarter this year. The luxury car maker will now launch three new cars in India to keep pace with the growth momentum.

The Roadster Z4 with a folding hard-top can run up to 250 kmph. It will be launched in the price band of Rs 50-60 lakh in the second half of this year. The petrol and diesel variants of the newly-launched BMW 7Series, which is priced at Rs 81 lakh and Rs 77 lakh, respectively, will hit the market in June.

“We are looking at incremental sales from untapped cities. Already, Ludhiana and Coimbatore are giving us sizable sales and we expect similar numbers from other tier-II cities,” said Mr Kronschnabl. BMW India will also double its presence in Delhi, its biggest market, by adding two showrooms in Gurgaon and West Delhi to take the total number of dealers to 24 by the end-year. The company has also roped in HDFC Bank — the largest private player in the auto loan market — as a preferred financier. It already has a tie-up with ICICI Bank for car finance.

Its premium car rivals Mercedes Benz launched the new M-Class SUV and the C-Class, while the third largest player, Audi, had launched the new A4, A6 and Q7 in India this year. With sales growth of 22% in FY09 to 6,671 units, luxury cars remained the fastest growing segment.

Toyota Motors has confirmed its plan announced a year ago to import fully-built Lexus cars into the country. This move by Toyota - which operates in India though a joint-venture company, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) - has been prompted by the 22% increase in luxury car sales in the domestic market for the year ended March 2009.

Although there are many Lexus cars on Indian roads, all of them are imported directly by individual consumers.

“We are very much looking at introducing Lexus, based on the feedback of our dealers and distributors, but are yet to decide on a final timeframe to launch it in India,” TKM MD Hiroshi Nakagawa told ET.
